The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), while very beneficial for those currently enrolled in Medicare, can be overwhelming to understand. For this reason, here are the top three common mistakes we see occur during AEP that you should avoid!
Not Reviewing Your Coverage
Every year around September, an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) is sent to Medicare beneficiaries. It lists all the changes they can expect in their current Medicare plan for the upcoming year. These changes can include coverage, service area, or costs. If you ignore this document when it is sent to you, you may be sticking with a plan that won’t cover what you need or cost more than you can afford.
This is not an ideal situation to be in. When you receive this document, we highly recommend you read through it carefully so you can have an idea of what changes will be made and if you should consider other Medicare options.
Falling for Medicare Scams
Medicare scammers always know the best times to pull their schemes, but you don’t have to fall victim to this. The best way to avoid these scams is to know that Medicare will never call you. Not many people realize that when they get a call from someone claiming to be from Medicare that it’s not actually a person from Medicare. It’s a scammer doing everything in their power to convince you to believe them and to get you to say any private information over the phone willingly. This includes your Social Security number, Medicare ID number, or even your bank account details.
You should never give this information to anyone, especially over the phone.
Not Considering Drug Coverage
For some, prescription drug coverage isn’t needed. However, for others, it’s a necessity. If you have prescriptions you take regularly but don’t have the proper coverage for them, you should consider looking into a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during this period. If you currently have a Part D plan but find that it doesn’t cover everything you need, you can also use this period to view other Part D plans available and see which one may be a better fit for you.
